FAQs

Do you charge a submission fee?

We do not! Because our goal is to make publishing more accessible, we do not charge submission fees. That means, however, that we don’t yet have the funds to pay writers. But we’re working on it.

Do you cap submissions?

We do. To protect the health and safety of our all-volunteer staff, we cap submissions at 300 per genre. So we’ll close for a category once we reach 300 submissions or on the end date of the current window, whichever comes first.

How many pieces can I submit?

We accept one submission per category each submission window. So writers can submit one Short-Short (100 words), one Micro (400 words), and one Flash (1,000 words) piece during each period. The only catch is we have to respond to one before you can submit another.

Do you pay authors?

Unfortunately, we do not yet have the funds to pay contributors. But we do our best to promote our author’s work however we can through social media, nominations for awards, and other channels. We hope to be able to pay contributors in the future!

Do you nominate work for awards?

YES! We nominate our writers for all the awards we’re eligible for, including Best of the Net, the Pushcart Prize, and Best American Essays.

Do you solicit work?

Because we are a new publication, we do occasionally solicit work from writers we know and love to help establish ourselves as a magazine. But most of the work we’ve published so far has come from open submissions!

Can In Short staff submit to the magazine?

No! In Short does not accept submissions from current editors, interns, or readers. Former staff may submit once they are no longer affiliated with the magazine.

Do you have social media?

In Short is on X @InShortLit. We share work regularly there and love to be tagged in your posts!

How can I reach you?
